In a 2008 police interview recording, Duane (Keffe D) Davis disclosed to detectives that his nephew, Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson, was the one who fired the fatal shots that ended the life of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, who claimed to have been present in the vehicle with Anderson during the incident, is facing accusations of orchestrating the 1996 slaying of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon in Las Vegas. Notably, at the time of the interview, Anderson had passed away a decade earlier.
According to Davis’s account in the interview with Los Angeles police, he and Anderson, along with two others, were traveling in a white Cadillac when they pulled up next to a vehicle containing Shakur and rap mogul Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that he would have taken action if the situation had been different but passed his weapon to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith as Knight’s car was on the opposite side. However, Smith declined to take the gun, and Anderson, seated in the back, seized it and initiated the gunfire, as detailed in the audio recording played for the jurors.
This marked the first instance of Davis openly discussing his role in the incident with law enforcement. The interview serves as crucial evidence in the state’s case against the 63-year-old Davis. Prosecutors emphasized their reliance on Davis’s own admissions in police interviews, podcasts, and his co-authored 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” Despite previously suggesting that his nephew was not involved in Shakur’s shooting and implicating Knight or Sean (Diddy) Combs, Davis now faces the legal repercussions.
Maintaining his innocence, Davis has entered a plea of not guilty, with his attorney challenging the prosecution’s portrayal as fictitious and discrediting Davis’s statements as unreliable. The detectives, who initially questioned Davis regarding the 1997 death of Shakur’s rival Notorious B.I.G., clarified that he was briefly considered a suspect in that case but was later cleared of suspicion.
Prosecutors argue that Davis breached confidentiality by later divulging details of the shooting, rendering any prior agreements with law enforcement void. The killing of Shakur, allegedly in retaliation for an earlier altercation involving Davis’s nephew and Shakur’s entourage, continues to captivate public interest, with Shakur’s enduring legacy as a cultural icon and influential rapper remaining strong years after his tragic demise.
