A newly established independent game development studio is leveraging its team’s past experiences at renowned gaming companies to innovate in a competitive industry. Studio Reset, headquartered in Edmonton, comprises three members who previously collaborated at various firms, including Bioware, known for creating popular titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Kaelin Lavallee, the creative director, departed Bioware in 2015 and collaborated with several game companies before co-founding Studio Reset with Kris Schoneberg and Francis Lacuna earlier this year. Lavallee expressed a desire to explore the creative and production aspects of game development.
This trend of experienced developers from major studios forming independent game studios is evident in other recent Canadian game ventures. For instance, Ambrosia Sky by Soft Rains in Toronto features veterans from Ubisoft and Bethesda, while Reply All by Peculiar Path in Toronto includes developers with backgrounds in series like Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption.
Although embarking on independent ventures in creative industries, especially in the competitive gaming sector, poses risks due to the vast number of new releases annually, smaller teams like Studio Reset offer developers opportunities to showcase their creativity as larger studios focus on high-stakes projects.
Studio Reset’s inaugural game, The Eventide, is a supernatural mystery set in a “neon-noir” Canadian environment inspired by The X-Files and narrative puzzle games. Players will select investigators from a diverse cast to unravel unsolved cases, each investigator providing unique perspectives on the mysteries akin to Mulder and Scully from The X-Files.
Paul Fogolin, president of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, emphasized the symbiotic relationship between AAA studios and independent developers, highlighting the latter’s role in bringing innovation and fresh ideas to the industry. Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels in Montreal, transitioned to indie development to re-engage in hands-on game creation amid a shift away from larger studio environments.
The evolving landscape in the gaming industry has seen significant job cuts, prompting developers to explore independent routes for creative freedom and stability. While challenges exist in marketing and visibility compared to AAA titles, new indie studios like Studio Reset aim for sustainability and a loyal audience base rather than explosive success.
As the gaming market continues to expand with thousands of new titles annually, success for Studio Reset means garnering enough support to sustain ongoing game development for their niche audience, prioritizing quality over mass appeal.
