Claire Williams, the former head of a Formula 1 team, is contemplating a shift into politics and may potentially stand as a Member of Parliament in the upcoming General Election, reports Mirror Sport. With a prominent presence in the motorsport arena, Williams stands out as one of the few women to have led an F1 team.
Having served at the helm of the Williams team established by her late father, Sir Frank Williams, for close to two decades, she ascended to the position of deputy team principal in 2013. Responsible for the team’s daily operations and serving as the Williams family’s representative on the board, she remained in this role until 2020 when the team was acquired by Dorilton Capital, an American investment company.
Drawing from her experience in the F1 paddock, Williams is contemplating leveraging her leadership skills to venture into politics. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Williams is considering the prospect of running as a Conservative candidate in the upcoming General Election, although concrete plans are yet to be finalized.
Armed with a degree in politics from Newcastle University, Williams expressed her interest in pursuing a career in politics in an interview with Motor Sport Magazine. Reflecting on her aspirations, she shared her desire to drive positive change and improve people’s lives, akin to her dedication to enhancing the Williams team’s performance and culture.
Notably, Williams would not be the first individual from the F1 realm to transition into politics. Past examples include Max Mosley, who transitioned from the Conservative party to become the president of the FIA. While some, like Emerson Fittipaldi, faced electoral defeats, others like Carlos Reutemann found success in political leadership roles post-F1.
