Reform UK faced a setback in a crucial Welsh constituency, signaling vulnerability for Nigel Farage’s party, according to Andy Burnham. The Mayor of Greater Manchester highlighted a growing willingness to counter the right-wing movement following Labour’s loss in the Caerphilly Senned by-election, a historically held seat since 1999.
Despite being favored by bookmakers and heavily investing resources, Reform fell short with Plaid Cymru securing 47% of the vote compared to Reform’s 36%. Burnham, speaking at an event with Ros-Wynne Jones, emphasized the defeat as a positive sign that Reform can be challenged and stopped.
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram echoed Burnham’s sentiments, stressing the need for direct confrontation with Reform. Rotheram emphasized the importance of unity within the Labour Party to effectively combat the growing influence of Reform and the rising popularity of the Greens.
Burnham also expressed satisfaction with Lucy Powell winning the deputy leadership contest, highlighting the necessity of a unified approach to tackle Reform’s populist right-wing ideology. Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth welcomed the election result as a validation of their vision for Wales, positioning the party as the genuine alternative to billionaire-funded Reform.
