A woman who hitchhiked narrowly escaped a dangerous truck driver who was responsible for torturing and murdering 50 women. Vanessa Veselka, aged 56, was almost a victim of the infamous serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, who used his truck as a torture chamber during his reign of terror in the United States from 1975 to 1990.
Rhoades, known as the ‘Truck Stop Killer,’ often preyed on vulnerable hitchhikers, sex workers, and young women traveling alone at truck stops. In the summer of 1985, Vanessa hitched a ride with a trucker near Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, shortly after the discovery of a young teenage hitchhiker’s body in a truck stop dumpster.
Their journey to Ohio seemed uneventful as they enjoyed Diet Coke and listened to Bruce Springsteen. However, Vanessa’s ordeal began when she accepted a ride from another trucker who turned out to be the menacing Rhoades.
Vanessa described Rhoades as different from other truckers, with an exceptionally clean cab. Initially appearing normal, Rhoades’ demeanor shifted ominously during the ride.
In a chilling account in Vanity Fair, Vanessa recounted how Rhoades mentioned a dead girl in a dumpster and a mysterious group called the Laughing Death Society. The situation escalated when Rhoades pulled over, brandishing a hunting knife.
Vanessa managed to stall him, urging him to reconsider his actions. Eventually, Rhoades simply said, “run,” prompting Vanessa to flee into the woods, escaping the harrowing encounter.
Years later, Vanessa, now a successful author, learned about Rhoades’ crimes through a news article. She recognized him from his younger photos, realizing the danger she had narrowly escaped.
Rhoades’ atrocities included the abduction and murder of 14-year-old Regina Kay Walters in 1990. His truck was equipped with handcuffs on the ceiling to restrain his victims for torture before killing them.
Among his victims were newlyweds Patricia Candace Walsh and Douglas Scott Zyskowski, who fell prey to Rhoades during their hitchhiking journey. Rhoades shot Mr. Zyskowski and subjected Mrs. Walsh to prolonged torture before her tragic demise.
Finally apprehended in 1990, Rhoades was convicted of Regina’s murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. His capture came after a state trooper found a woman chained inside his truck, leading to his arrest on serious charges in Arizona.
