Details have emerged about the severe mistreatment suffered by a newborn baby, following the sentencing of a mother involved in her son’s tragic death.
Kristie Lee Willmot’s infant, Michael Willmot, tragically lost his life in 2021 at only 37 days old. Initially accused of murder, Willmot and her then partner, Robert Alan Gee, eventually admitted to lesser charges during their recent court appearance.
Willmot confessed to acts of cruelty toward children under 16 years old, occurring between June 10-15, 2021. On the other hand, Gee pleaded guilty to manslaughter, offering no further statements during the proceedings.
According to reports, Willmot would visit Gee at a caravan park in Logan, leaving baby Michael under Gee’s supervision for a brief period while she went to acquire drugs for a friend. During this time, Michael became agitated, leading Gee to violently shake the baby before tossing him onto a couch. Subsequently, Gee reassured Willmot that Michael was fine and asleep.
Following these events, the baby’s health deteriorated, experiencing high fever and feeding difficulties. Instead of seeking medical help, Willmot documented the symptoms and conversed with Gee about the situation via text messages.
The situation worsened, and on June 14, 2021, Michael stopped breathing and was pronounced dead by paramedics, four days after the initial injuries. Autopsy results indicated severe injuries consistent with violent shaking.
A prosecutor highlighted that Willmot’s failure to fulfill her maternal responsibilities caused harm to the child. While she cooperated with law enforcement, she concealed her involvement in acquiring drugs during the incident involving her child.
Although Willmot was not directly responsible for her son’s death, the court held her accountable for neglecting to prevent the fatal outcome. Justice Martin Burns emphasized that upon Willmot’s return, it was evident the baby was unwell, and she should have taken action as his condition worsened.
Willmot received a four-year suspended jail sentence, having already served time in custody. Gee’s sentencing is scheduled for November 13.
