“UK Launches ‘Fuel Finder’ to Save Drivers Money”

Millions of drivers have the opportunity to save money on fuel purchases following the launch of a government initiative. As part of this scheme, all of the approximately 8,350 fuel stations across the nation are now required to promptly notify customers within 30 minutes of any changes in the prices of petrol and diesel. This information will be shared with third-party websites and apps, enabling motorists to compare fuel prices conveniently wherever they are in the country.

The ultimate goal is to provide real-time updates on fuel prices, allowing drivers to maximize their savings, potentially accumulating significant savings over time. Previously, only 65% of UK forecourts were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority. The new government initiative, known as ‘Fuel Finder,’ will ensure that all petrol stations comply with strict rules regarding price information disclosure. Failure to comply may result in operators receiving a “compliance notice” or facing fines of up to 1% of their global annual turnover.

The initiative comes in response to concerns that drivers have been paying excessive prices for fuel. Even a small price difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 each time they refill their tank. Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering drivers with information to make informed choices on where to purchase fuel. He highlighted the potential for a pricing shake-up similar to other European countries, where consumers can easily access and compare fuel prices through mobile apps and in-car information screens.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would lead to increased competition among retailers, ultimately benefiting drivers with better value at the pumps. As more of the country’s fuel stations submit daily price updates, drivers will have greater accessibility to find the most cost-effective options near them using various apps or navigation tools.

Currently, the national average price for unleaded fuel stands at 132.1p per liter, with diesel priced at 141.2p per liter.
