“Heartless Parents Laugh as Baby Dies: Sentenced for Abuse”

An appalling case unfolded in court as it was revealed that a heartless couple callously laughed while bringing their lifeless nine-day-old baby to the hospital after beating her to death. Hilary Johnson II, 24, received a 19-year prison sentence, while Z’ibreyea S. Parker, 22, was sentenced to 10 years for their involvement in the tragic demise of their newborn daughter, I’ijayah Johnson.

The distressing incident occurred on May 4, 2024, when Johnson and Parker arrived at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters with I’ijayah, who was unresponsive and cold. They falsely claimed she had fallen from a stroller while Johnson was out jogging, but medical professionals quickly determined that the baby’s severe injuries did not align with the parents’ story.

Hospital staff noted multiple signs of abuse on I’ijayah’s body, including burns on her feet, cuts on her head and face, and bruises on her back. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of I’ijayah’s death was blunt trauma to her head and torso, compounded by severe burns consistent with hot liquid, broken ribs, and other internal and external injuries.

Both parents pleaded guilty to their respective charges, with Johnson admitting to second-degree murder and Parker to child abuse causing serious injury. Despite their pleas, the prosecution dropped Parker’s murder charge and one child abuse count against Johnson as part of the agreement.

In response to the sentencing, Attorney Ramin Fatehi emphasized the vulnerability of newborns and the tragedy of I’ijayah’s short life. He expressed the challenges of the case and the importance of securing justice for innocent victims like I’ijayah.

The grandfather of I’ijayah, Hilary Johnson Sr., had raised concerns about the couple’s ability to care for the baby prior to her tragic death. Despite offers of assistance, Johnson and Parker, who were struggling with mental health issues, opted to decline help and continued living in difficult circumstances.

Reflecting on the situation, Johnson Sr. lamented the unexpected turn his son and daughter-in-law’s lives had taken, expressing hope that they would prioritize the well-being of their child. The heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the need to protect the most vulnerable members of society, particularly innocent infants like I’ijayah.
