The Queen faced immense sorrow in 2002 as she lost both her sister and mother within a short span of 49 days.
On 9th February of that year, Buckingham Palace confirmed the passing of Princess Margaret, stating she peacefully passed away at 6.30am in The King Edward VII Hospital, with her children Lord Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto by her side.
Princess Margaret suffered a stroke and cardiac issues, leading to her transfer from Kensington Palace to The King Edward VII Hospital, where she later passed away. Her deteriorating health had been ongoing since 1998, exacerbated by an accident in 1999 that affected her mobility.
Following her death, Princess Margaret’s coffin was placed in her Kensington Palace bedroom, surrounded by her cherished possessions. The Queen paid her respects in a private moment before Margaret’s coffin was transported to the Queen’s Chapel at St James’s Palace.
At her funeral on 15 February, the Queen Mother arrived by helicopter to St George’s Chapel, where Margaret’s carefully planned service included musical tributes and hymns that reflected her interests, with her coffin adorned with roses and lilies.
After the service, the Queen Mother, despite difficulty, stood in a poignant gesture of farewell to her daughter. The Queen, visibly affected by the loss, bid a tearful goodbye as Margaret’s coffin was prepared for cremation.
Princess Margaret’s final wish to be cremated was fulfilled at Slough Crematorium, allowing her to join her parents at Windsor Castle’s King George VI Memorial Chapel. She became the first royal in 60 years not to be buried in the royal crypt.
Her resting place now lies alongside King George VI, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and as of 2022, her sister Queen Elizabeth II, fulfilling her desire to be reunited with her family in eternity.
