“Families Push for Clarification on ‘Life Sentences’ Law”

Parents of Sarah Everard and other families who have lost loved ones are pushing for a redefinition of “life sentences” to accurately reflect incarceration until death. The Justice for Victims advocacy group highlighted the misconception that dangerous criminals are imprisoned for life when, in reality, this is often not the case. They urge lawmakers to amend the Sentencing Bill to clarify the term “life sentence” to only apply to cases of whole-life imprisonment.

This initiative comes in the wake of tragic incidents, including Sarah’s murder by Wayne Couzens, a former Metropolitan Police officer, who received a whole-life term. The campaign also includes families of victims like Sasha, Violet-Grace, Tony, and Jan, who suffered from heinous crimes.

The bereaved families are demanding increased rights for victims to participate in decisions regarding offenders’ supervision and release conditions. They are also advocating for the establishment of a child cruelty register to prevent convicted individuals from working with children or caring for their own.

In a separate move, the Ministry of Justice announced amendments to the Victims and Courts Bill aimed at safeguarding more children from sexual offenders. These changes will automatically restrict parental rights in cases of children born from rape or when a parent is convicted of serious sexual offenses against minors. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasized the priority of child safety in these situations.

The Ministry of Justice assured that their sentencing reforms will focus on keeping the most dangerous criminals incarcerated, with enhancements in tagging and restriction zones for victim protection. Offenders serving life sentences or other serious terms will not be impacted by the proposed Sentencing Bill.
