A tragic incident unfolded in Kentucky as a UPS cargo plane crashed and burst into flames, claiming the lives of 12 individuals. According to investigators, the aircraft’s engine separated during takeoff, leading to the catastrophic event.
The preliminary findings of the investigation were disclosed today, following the fatal crash that occurred shortly after the plane departed from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening. The death toll from the crash has now reached 12.
Security footage from the airport revealed the left engine of the 34-year-old McDonnell Douglas MD-11 detaching from the wing as the plane accelerated down the runway. Subsequently, the jet ignited in flames and collided with nearby industrial structures.
Speaking at a briefing, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) official Todd Inman stated, “We have reviewed airport surveillance footage, which captures the detachment of the left engine from the wing during takeoff.” He added, “A significant fire erupted in the vicinity of the left wing during the takeoff roll.”
Inman further described the extensive debris field that extended approximately half a mile, indicating the challenging prospects of locating survivors amidst the charred aftermath of the crash.
Despite managing to briefly ascend, the plane destined for Honolulu crashed beyond the airport perimeter, striking Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Autoparts. The impact resulted in a fiery explosion illuminating the night sky and triggering a substantial blaze along the industrial area.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency to expedite the deployment of resources to the crash site.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed the rising death toll of 12 individuals, including three UPS crew members, several ground workers, and a child. With additional injuries reported, the search and rescue efforts continue in the devastated area.
