“UK Energy Provider Gives £150 Credit to Thousands”

Thousands of households in the UK are set to receive a complimentary £150 credit from their energy provider this month. Utilita has commenced the distribution of the Warm Home Discount funds to smart prepay customers starting January 7 and aims to complete the payments by the end of the month.

The Warm Home Discount, valued at £150, is directly credited to the electricity account of eligible households, rather than being given as cash. To qualify for this discount, individuals must have been receiving specific benefits on the qualifying date, which varies annually. For this winter, the qualifying date was August 24, 2025, and households must have been receiving the designated benefits on this date to receive the Warm Home Discount.

Residents in England or Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while individuals in Scotland will only receive it automatically if they receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. For other eligible benefits, manual application through the energy supplier is required, as the scheme is not applicable in Northern Ireland.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced the removal of the high energy use criteria for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. Previously, applicants had to demonstrate high energy costs to qualify, but this requirement has been eliminated. DESNZ anticipates an increase in the number of households benefitting from the scheme, estimating a rise of 2.7 million households to a total of 6.1 million.

In recent news, energy bills have seen an increase, with the Ofgem price cap rising to £1,758 for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit, up from £1,755. Consumers on a standard variable rate tariff are covered by the Ofgem price cap, as the bill is determined by usage of gas and electricity.

The Ofgem price cap sets limits on charges for gas and electricity units, as well as fixed daily standing charges for energy network connections. This cap provides an estimate of annual costs for individuals with typical energy consumption.
