Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba on Wednesday, as confirmed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident was reported to authorities when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake and immediately sought help from First Nation safety officers, who transported the boys to the nursing station. Despite efforts, the children were pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to police investigations, it is believed that the boys wandered away from their residence and entered the lake, with no suspicion of foul play involved. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of the two young members of the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation, with the community and neighboring areas providing support to the grieving family.
Anisininew Okimawin, representing the four First Nations in the Island Lake region including Garden Hill, shared that the family had constructed a fence to prevent direct access to the water. McDougall mentioned the profound shock and devastation within the community, with efforts underway to mobilize resources and assistance for the bereaved family. Garden Hill is situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.

Chris Hipolito disclosed that an earlier drowning occurred during the spring ice breakup on Island Lake, alongside multiple near-tragic incidents.
