“Tragic Car Heat Death: Father Found Deceased Before Surrender”

A tragic incident unfolded when a two-year-old girl passed away after being left inside a sweltering car, with her body temperature exceeding 40C when emergency responders arrived. The girl’s father, Christopher Scholtes, aged 38, had left his daughter in the car for an extended period upon their return home, claiming he left her to nap with the car’s air conditioning on. Scholtes’ wife, who is an anaesthesiologist, was at work during the incident, only discovering her daughter’s absence upon returning home later that day.

Parking the car in direct sunlight on a scorching July 9 last year, Scholtes placed the vehicle in a position where it absorbed the intense heat, with temperatures in the area reaching a searing 43C. Surprisingly, on the day Scholtes was set to surrender following a plea agreement, he was discovered deceased.

Scholtes confessed to authorities that he knew his daughter was inside the car, admitting that he typically parked in the garage but refrained from doing so that day due to obstruction by exercise equipment. Investigations revealed that Scholtes’ other two children, aged nine and five, disclosed that their father frequently left them unsupervised in the car.

Allegations against Scholtes included indulging in alcohol, video games, and adult content while his daughter was left unattended in the hot car. Despite initially claiming his daughter was in the car for around 30 minutes, surveillance footage contradicted his statement, showing him returning home at 1pm and his wife inquiring about their daughter’s whereabouts at 4pm.

Upon discovering the motionless child still strapped in the car seat, the parents rushed the girl to the hospital, but she tragically did not survive. An autopsy indicated the cause of death as environmental heat exposure, deemed accidental.

Scholtes initially mentioned leaving his daughter in the car with the air conditioning on for 30 minutes as she slept after shopping. However, he later acknowledged that the car’s engine automatically shuts off after half an hour. Bodycam footage captured Scholtes expressing distress over the situation, while text messages between him and his wife suggested a history of leaving the children unattended in the car.

Following a plea deal where he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse, Scholtes was expected to surrender to jail but was found deceased in a Phoenix suburb. The plea agreement included a maximum sentence of 30 years for the charges, with a sentencing date set for November 21.
