“Teenager Critically Injured in Shark Attack Off North Queensland Coast”

A young teenager is in critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the ocean. The incident took place off Cook Esplanade in North Queensland, Australia. The 14-year-old boy sustained severe abdominal injuries and was quickly transported to the hospital. He has been airlifted to Townsville University Hospital where he is currently receiving critical care.

Reportedly, the boy was in the water fishing with his friends when the attack occurred. His friends assisted him back to shore following the incident. Elsie Seriat OAM, the Mayor of Torres Shire Council, expressed deep concern over the attack and commended the quick actions and bravery of the boy’s friends in ensuring his safety.

The community has extended their thoughts and prayers to the boy and his family during this challenging time. Ms. Seriat emphasized the importance of being cautious in the waters and urged residents to be vigilant about potential risks. The council is collaborating closely with Queensland Health, the Queensland Police Service, and the affected families.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli conveyed his well wishes for the boy’s recovery and acknowledged the distressing nature of the situation for all involved. Shark incidents in Queensland’s Torres Strait are uncommon, with the last recorded incident dating back to 2017. The area is not covered by the Government Shark Control Program aimed at reducing shark-related risks along the coast.

According to the Department of Primary Industries, local waters are home to around 100 shark species, with seven posing a higher risk to humans. The community is urged to remain cautious and informed about potential dangers in the surrounding waters.
