A company based in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling activities to extract hydrogen from underground sources on a commercial scale, aiming to shift from traditional fossil fuel-based production methods. Regina’s Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling its third well at the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, offering a novel primary energy source.
Hydrogen is a versatile gas that can serve as a clean fuel and be utilized in fuel cells for electricity generation, producing only water as a byproduct. This characteristic makes it an attractive option for reducing emissions in challenging sectors like transportation and steel manufacturing. Currently, the majority of commercially available hydrogen, termed grey hydrogen, is derived from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, leading to significant carbon dioxide emissions.
