“Massive Wave Strikes Tenerife Beach, Causing Panic”

Sunbathers enjoying their holiday had to quickly move to safety as a massive wave unexpectedly hit their beach.

Tourists along the Tenerife coast were compelled to evacuate the sandy shore when a large volume of water surged in, causing chaos as it knocked people down and prompted screams from onlookers upon impact. A video recorded at the popular spot captured the intense moment the water crashed against the rocks, sending vacationers scrambling to avoid being pulled into the ocean.

Authorities have been consistently cautioning individuals about the risks of swimming in turbulent sea conditions. This cautionary video was shared in response to a significant increase in drownings in the Canary Islands, with 48 fatalities recorded between January and September of this year.

The Coastal safety organization Canarias, 1500 KM de Costa, highlighted that many accidents still occur due to disregarding the red flag warnings. They posted the alarming footage on Facebook, taken at the Natural pools of Jover in La Laguna, with the caption “Prevention, please,” attached to the clip from the previous week.

Earlier this year, a British holidaymaker lost his life after being swept into the sea by a wave on the island. The 60-year-old was among three individuals who encountered difficulties during an incident at Los Gigantes natural swimming pool in the western part of the island. He was discovered face-down in the water before being attended to by a rescue helicopter, along with police, firefighters, and emergency medical responders who rushed to the scene.

The man was airlifted to a nearby football ground where rescue teams found he had suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to revive him, authorities confirmed that they were unsuccessful. The other two individuals swept into the sea, both women, managed to reach safety on their own. One was taken to a health center for minor injuries, while the other received treatment for a panic attack.

Due to a worrying rise in drowning incidents, the Canary Islands Government has initiated a significant public awareness campaign. Local officials have been urging caution near the sea in the Canary Islands this week due to the powerful swell and heavy waves.

Manuel Miranda, Regional Minister for Territorial Policy, emphasized the need to prioritize sea safety, stating, “Our coasts and swimming pools claimed more lives than our roads last year. Restoring respect for the sea is crucial. This campaign is essential to address the high number of fatal aquatic accidents that persist annually in the Canary Islands.”

In a separate incident in May, a four-year-old British boy tragically passed away in a hotel pool at a Tenerife resort. The incident occurred in the town of San Miguel de Abona, situated in the southern region of the popular holiday destination.

After receiving an emergency call before 5 pm reporting a child in cardiac arrest, emergency services swiftly responded to José Miguel Galván Bello Avenue.

Despite being rescued from the water by a lifeguard, the child remained unresponsive, as reported by Spanish broadcaster Telecinco. A spokesperson from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office mentioned, “We are providing support to the family of a British child who passed away in Spain and are in contact with local authorities.”
