Louis Tomlinson has shared his emotional experience upon learning about the tragic passing of his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, with Niall Horan being the one to deliver the heartbreaking news. Payne, who advocated for a reunion of the iconic boy band alongside Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, tragically fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina at the age of 31 last October.
During an interview on The Diary Of A CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett, Tomlinson revealed the moment he received the devastating news while in Los Angeles. He compared the shock of Payne’s death to the pain he felt when his sister Felicite passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2019.
Tomlinson expressed his regret at not being able to provide more help, acknowledging that Payne was going through a difficult time in his life. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Payne’s death resulted from multiple traumas and internal and external hemorrhaging after the fall from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires.
Despite Payne’s advocacy for a One Direction reunion, Tomlinson admitted that it wouldn’t feel appropriate without him. He reflected on the possibility of a reunion in the future but emphasized that Payne’s passing had a significant impact on those plans.
In a separate development, a court in Argentina dismissed charges of criminal negligence against three of the five individuals initially charged in connection with Payne’s death. Payne was posthumously honored with a video tribute at the Brit Awards in March, showcasing his time with his family, on The X Factor, and with One Direction, who received numerous awards before disbanding. Following the group’s separation, Payne launched his solo album “LP1” in December 2019, featuring popular tracks like “Polaroid,” “Strip That Down,” and “For You.”
