Lando Norris was overwhelmed with emotion as he clinched his first Formula 1 world championship title. The British driver secured third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen by a mere two points to claim the coveted championship.
Norris, the 35th world champion in F1 history, expressed his gratitude and joy over winning the championship after a period of uncertainty. On the McLaren team radio, he tearfully thanked his team, his parents, and acknowledged the realization of his dreams.
McLaren team principal Zak Brown praised Norris and his teammate Oscar for their exceptional performance, highlighting their skills as top-tier drivers. Norris had a comfortable 12-point lead over Verstappen before the Abu Dhabi race, where Verstappen’s late-season surge kept the championship battle intense.
Despite facing a steward’s investigation during the race for a contentious overtaking maneuver, Norris managed to avoid penalties, securing his championship victory. Verstappen’s dominant race win in Abu Dhabi was not enough to derail Norris’ title charge, with Norris finishing ahead of his McLaren teammate and Verstappen’s Red Bull rival.
Verstappen, crossing the finish line ahead of the pack, refrained from strategic maneuvers to challenge Norris’ position, ultimately securing a second-place finish. Norris’ remarkable season culminated in a well-deserved championship triumph, marking a significant milestone in his racing career.
