A group of 10 housemates became alarmed when they heard strange noises emanating from their basement, initially suspecting a haunting. However, their discovery turned out to be even more unsettling. In addition to the eerie sounds, the tenants noticed open drawers in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as lights on in unoccupied rooms.
Driven by curiosity and fear, they traced the noises to the basement, where they encountered a locked door. One housemate, Mark Hartman, recounted how his roommate Brett, while investigating the basement, unexpectedly encountered a mysterious man.
Upon questioning, the man identified himself as Jeremy but refused to provide further details before leaving abruptly. With the assistance of law enforcement, the group managed to unlock the door, revealing a fully furnished bedroom occupied by Jeremy, complete with personal belongings and living essentials.
The students, attending Ohio State University, were shocked to realize that Jeremy had been residing in their basement without authorization, entering through a side door to avoid detection. It was later discovered that Jeremy’s cousin had previously lived in the house, granting him initial access.
The incident, which occurred in Columbus, Ohio in 2013, prompted the leasing company, NorthSteppe Reality, to change the locks following Jeremy’s discovery. Concerns were raised by the students regarding the company’s oversight of unauthorized occupants.
Subsequently, a note was left for Jeremy to contact the landlord, leading to his compliance and subsequent removal of his belongings from the room. While Jeremy had access to bathroom facilities in the basement, the students believed he did not consume their food or enter their personal spaces.
Mark highlighted the security lapse due to unchanged locks and non-duplicable keys, expressing the hope for discounted rent as they sought legal advice. Despite the unsettling situation, another housemate, Jimmy Alderman, described Jeremy as a decent individual, acknowledging the potential dangers of the situation.
Overall, the incident shed light on the importance of property security and tenant screening, urging the students to take necessary precautions and seek resolutions following the unsettling discovery.
