A mining city in South America known as La Rinconada, Peru, has gained notoriety for its high levels of crime, including murder and sex trafficking, as well as widespread poverty and dangerous pollution. Situated at an altitude of 5,100m above sea level, the city’s harsh conditions make it a challenging place to live or visit.
Despite its reputation as a lawless and bleak city, one traveler, known as ‘Zazza The Italian,’ bravely ventured to La Rinconada to explore its realities. He documented his experiences on social media, describing the city as akin to hell due to its dark and filthy environment.
Upon arrival from Juliaca, Zazza encountered a desolate landscape covered in snow, with extreme cold that he found devastating. The streets were littered with trash, resembling a vast slum where children cooked by the roadside, many of whom were deprived of education and forced into child labor.
Breathing in the thin air of the highest permanent human settlement in the world, Zazza visited a basic health center for assistance. He learned about chronic mountain sickness prevalent in the town, affecting a significant portion of the population. Local remedies like chewing coca leaves were suggested to alleviate symptoms.
During his exploration, Zazza witnessed the dire living conditions of La Rinconada’s inhabitants, including rampant alcoholism, crime, and poverty. He encountered miners struggling to find specks of gold in the waste from the mines to support their families, highlighting the harsh reality of life in the city.
La Rinconada experienced a significant population increase following a gold rush in 2003, leading to a surge in illegal mining activities and social issues. Workers revealed the exploitative nature of their labor, working long hours with minimal pay and facing health risks from mercury pollution.
The city’s lack of basic amenities, sanitation, and government services exacerbates the living conditions for its residents. Zazza’s interactions with locals and law enforcement shed light on the pervasive crime, territorial disputes, and dangerous mining operations that define La Rinconada’s harsh environment.
Reflecting on his experience, Zazza expressed disbelief at the extreme hardships faced by the city’s residents, emphasizing the desperation and dire circumstances that drive people to endure such challenging conditions. Despite his efforts to raise awareness about the issues plaguing La Rinconada, he acknowledged the limitations and dangers of addressing deeper societal problems in the area.
