An individual who intentionally set fire to her former boyfriend’s residence, resulting in the loss of all his possessions, made a chilling phone call to alert him about the blazing inferno. Stacey Hinks, aged 34, not only devastated her ex-partner’s life by destroying his home and belongings but also caused extensive damage to three adjacent properties. The incident occurred at a property on Springfield Grove, Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, on the evening of May 15.
The victim, left with only the clothes on his back, suffered a complete loss of his possessions, including sentimental items. The neighboring homes also endured significant damage, leading to the displacement of their occupants. Fortunately, quick-thinking neighbors managed to evacuate one resident, an 89-year-old woman, who narrowly escaped harm. The other two residents were thankfully not present during the fire.
In a victim impact statement, the ex-partner expressed profound loss and distress, emphasizing the irreplaceable nature of the destroyed sentimental items. The 90-year-old neighbor, who also faced substantial losses, including items from her deceased husband, conveyed the lasting impact on her life and independence due to the malicious act.
After Hinks was arrested and charged with arson endangering life, she eventually pleaded guilty. Subsequently, she received a sentence of four years and ten months in prison at York Crown Court. Detective Constable Karen Everitt of North Yorkshire Police, who led the investigation, highlighted the severe consequences of Hinks’ actions, underscoring the devastation inflicted upon innocent individuals and emphasizing the importance of community intervention in averting further tragedy.
