Argentina’s head coach, Felipe Contepomi, labeled Tom Curry as a “bully” and alleged that the England flanker pushed him during a heated confrontation in the tunnel following Sunday’s 27-23 loss at Allianz Stadium.
The Pumas were furious over Curry’s tackle on Juan Cruz Mallia in the 75th minute, which led to Mallia exiting the field with a suspected ACL knee injury, leaving Argentina with only 14 players for the remainder of the game.
Although Curry’s challenge resulted in a penalty, it was not reviewed by the television match official. Contepomi vented his frustration at the incident and a brawl broke out between the teams at the final whistle, escalating to the confrontation between Contepomi and Curry.
“Curry, in my opinion, tends to be aggressive by nature. He approached me in the tunnel and made physical contact. He is 27 and strong, while I am 48,” Contepomi stated.
“When he came towards us to greet one of our coaches (Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe), Lobbe declined as we were upset due to the injury caused by his reckless actions,” Contepomi added.
“After I mentioned the injury, he responded rudely and pushed me. Perhaps that’s his way of behaving. I do not know him, but I am displeased with the situation.”
“Following an injury, showing humility and offering an apology would be the respectful thing to do. However, he did the opposite,” Contepomi continued.
“Perhaps his behavior is characteristic of a bully. While rugby is known for its physicality, it is crucial to prioritize player safety and mutual respect in the sport.”
In defense of Curry, England’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, praised Curry’s character, highlighting him as a team player with exceptional respect and integrity.
Regarding the tunnel incident, Borthwick clarified that he was not present during the altercation and emphasized that the focus should remain on the competitive Test match between the two teams.
England secured their 11th consecutive victory by overcoming a resilient Argentina side in a closely contested match, reflecting on their progress and potential for further growth as a team.
Borthwick acknowledged the challenging nature of the Test match against Argentina and expressed optimism about the team’s development and the opportunities for improvement in the future.
