“Major Changes Coming to Universal Credit in 2022”

Significant changes are on the horizon for Universal Credit next year, affecting millions of recipients.

Universal Credit, managed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), supports over eight million individuals in the UK. It serves as the primary financial assistance before any adjustments or deductions are applied.

Among the upcoming modifications is an increase in the standard allowance, the foundational payment within Universal Credit that precedes any supplementary disbursements or reductions.

However, there are anticipated reductions in the health-related component for new Universal Credit claimants.

Universal Credit is gradually replacing most older legacy benefits, with the transition expected to be completed by March 2026.

The integration of Universal Credit involves phasing out Tax Credits, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Housing Benefit.

Individuals required to switch to Universal Credit will receive a “migration notice” by mail, granting a three-month period to initiate their claim.

Certain circumstances may allow the continuation of old benefits, such as the eligibility to retain Housing Benefit for those in supported or temporary housing.

Commencing April next year, the Universal Credit standard allowance will see a 6.2% increase, surpassing the inflation rate. For individuals aged 25 and above, the standard allowance will elevate from £92 to £98 weekly.</p
