Starmer Raises Concerns with Modi Over Russian Oil

Keir Starmer has raised concerns with India’s Prime Minister regarding the acquisition of Russian oil, which is being used to fund Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine.

During a meeting in Mumbai, the Prime Minister discussed the contentious issue with Narendra Modi. Just a day prior, Modi had extended birthday wishes to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, despite ongoing criticism for India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil.

Starmer confirmed that the topic of India buying Russian oil was addressed in his talks with Modi, emphasizing the steps being taken to resolve the conflict, particularly focusing on the Russian shadow fleet and collaborative efforts within the coalition.

Additionally, Starmer highlighted the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British Sikh activist detained in an Indian prison for nearly eight years without a conviction. He expressed that consular issues are consistently raised whenever possible, and noted that the Foreign Secretary would meet with Johal’s family in the upcoming weeks.

Gurpreet, Jagtar’s brother, expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in Jagtar’s case despite the Prime Minister raising the issue. He expressed hope for a constructive plan of action during his meeting with the Foreign Secretary.

Despite disagreements over the Ukraine conflict, the Prime Minister emphasized the strong ties between India and the UK, citing the new trade deal facilitating opportunities for British businesses in India. He also highlighted the collaboration on the production of three new Bollywood films in the UK.

The Prime Minister underscored the potential for partnership between the UK and India, recognizing India as the world’s largest democracy and a burgeoning economic powerhouse set to become the third-largest economy by 2028.
