“Burglars Strike Renoir Museum: Valuable Paintings Stolen”

Thieves recently targeted the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, located on the French Riviera, where they managed to steal four valuable paintings. The mayor of the town, Bryan Masson, revealed that the burglars entered the museum before 6 a.m. by creating a hole in a garden fence to carry out their art heist. However, the thieves were forced to drop two of the stolen paintings in the museum gardens when the police responded to the alarms triggered during the break-in.

Among the stolen artworks were “Madame Colonna Romano” and “Young Woman at the Well,” both belonging to Paris’s renowned Musée d’Orsay and on loan to the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Mayor Masson emphasized the significance of the museum’s history and heritage, condemning the theft as a serious offense.

The criminals also attempted to steal “Madame Pichon” and “Coco Reading,” which portrays Claude, the son of a famous Impressionist artist. These paintings were also dropped in the gardens during the chase by law enforcement. According to the Marseille prosecutor’s office, an investigation has been initiated into the organized theft.

The Renoir Museum, established in 1960 at the artist’s former residence in Cagnes-sur-Mer, houses a collection of 13 paintings by Renoir, along with various sculptures, furniture, and photographs. This incident follows a similar pattern of violent art robberies in Europe as highlighted by Europol, with a notable case being the Louvre Museum heist in Paris last year, where €88 million worth of jewels were stolen.

The security of museums in France has come under scrutiny, with a report indicating a lack of resources and preparedness to safeguard valuable artworks. Mayor Masson, a member of the National Rally (RN) party, called for enhanced security measures to protect museums across the country. The theft at the Renoir Museum serves as a stark reminder of the new wave of crimes targeting art institutions, emphasizing the urgency for improved security protocols.

A survey conducted by the French Culture Ministry in 2024 revealed deficiencies in emergency and risk prevention plans, with many institutions lacking adequate video surveillance systems. The incident underscores the growing threats faced by museums and the need for proactive measures to safeguard cultural treasures.
