They emphasized their desire to share his unique talent and humor with the world, showcasing moments that brought laughter to them and many others, while honoring his extraordinary life and contributions.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning film, television, and stage, Williams achieved fame through projects such as the TV sitcom “Mork & Mindy” (1978-82) and iconic films like “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). Recently, AI-generated videos featuring Williams have surfaced online, depicting him in various scenarios including podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and humorous commentary on movies like “Jurassic Park.” These videos were predominantly created using OpenAI’s video production and social media tool, Sora.
OpenAI eventually shut down the Sora app in response to significant backlash from the estates of prominent figures like Williams, Michael Jackson, Mister Rogers, and Martin Luther King Jr., who were digitally recreated in questionable contexts.
Zelda Williams, an accomplished actor and director, has been vocal in her opposition to AI recreations of her father, urging fans to refrain from sharing such content. In a recent Instagram story, she outlined her efforts to combat AI exploitation by rejuvenating her father’s Instagram account as a platform to share genuine clips and photos, countering the rampant misuse of his likeness in the digital realm.
While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, who starred alongside Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” express interest in utilizing AI to preserve Williams’s iconic voice, they stress the importance of obtaining the family’s consent for any such projects. Similarly, figures like Bernice King have denounced the unauthorized use of her father in AI applications.
