Filmmaker Ally Pankiw Declines “Harry Potter” Series Over Transphobia

Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw recently made a public statement about declining a directing opportunity for an upcoming television series based on the “Harry Potter” franchise, citing her refusal to support transphobia. Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on Instagram where she adamantly expressed her decision not to work on the HBO “Harry Potter” series, emphasizing her stance against funding transphobic content.

In her social media post, Pankiw straightforwardly stated, “It simply is this easy to say no to funding transphobia!” She clarified that the opportunity was for directing, not acting. Pankiw, known for her work on projects like “Black Mirror,” “Feel Good,” and the film “I Used to be Funny,” has been vocal about her principles regarding inclusivity and representation in the industry.

The exchange, dated April 21, did not disclose the identity of the person Pankiw was conversing with. The new television series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. The show will be available for streaming on Crave in Canada.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the “Harry Potter” books, has faced criticism for her controversial views on transgender issues. Her public statements on gender and sex have sparked debates and divided opinions, leading to scrutiny and backlash from various quarters, including within the entertainment industry.

Another director, Kate Herron, also shared her experience of turning down an offer to work on the “Harry Potter” series. Herron, recognized for her work on projects like “Loki,” expressed her solidarity with Pankiw’s decision. Despite being approached multiple times, Herron reiterated her unwavering refusal to be part of the production.

While Pankiw commended Herron’s stance, there has been no official response from HBO’s parent company regarding the refusals from directors. Requests for comments from Pankiw’s representative remain unanswered at this time. The industry’s response to Rowling’s controversial statements continues to impact collaborations and decisions within the entertainment landscape.
