A town in Weatherford, near Oklahoma City, is undergoing a mass evacuation of around 1,000 residents due to a hazardous chemical spill caused by a truck accident. The incident has led to the hospitalization of 36 individuals following exposure to the toxic substance, with authorities warning of unsafe air quality in the vicinity.
The crash occurred at approximately 10 pm local time on Wednesday, prompting emergency services to issue alerts shortly afterward. Witnesses observed emergency personnel wearing gas masks as they went door to door evacuating residents. One evacuee, Krystal Blackwell, described the surreal experience of being woken up by authorities in gas masks, likening it to a dream.
Weatherford’s Emergency Manager, Mike Karlin, expressed challenges in cleaning up the spill due to unfavorable weather conditions lacking wind to disperse the chemical. Residents reported noticing a pungent odor in their homes, with some experiencing coughing fits, indicating the severity of the situation.
Authorities were alerted to a possible tanker leakage at a Holiday Inn Express parking lot, leading to the discovery of a chemical spill and individuals exhibiting respiratory distress symptoms. As a precaution, 36 people were swiftly transported to hospitals for medical attention.
Following the chemical leak, schools in Weatherford and Southwest Oklahoma State University canceled classes for the day. An emergency alert instructed residents to evacuate north to a designated safety location due to the chemical spill. Additionally, medical assistance was made available at a local hardware store for individuals experiencing symptoms related to the incident.
