A devoted father of four tragically ended his life following what his family described as significant stress and hardship caused by a local authority, as revealed in an inquest.
Alistair Taylor, aged 34, had been running a successful barbershop for many years before being compelled to relocate when Blackpool Council abruptly terminated his lease at a local market.
Shortly after, he faced the distressing news that the council planned to acquire his family home through a Compulsory Purchase Order to make way for a new education campus. This announcement came after Alistair had extensively modified the house to accommodate his two disabled children.
During the inquest at Blackpool Town Hall, Coroner Alan Wilson highlighted various factors that contributed to the decline in Alistair’s mental well-being. Wilson noted that the loss of his business and home were significant triggers, which the council had underestimated in terms of impact on him and his family.
Additionally, Wilson mentioned that Alistair had been increasingly affected by negative influences on social media in the months preceding his passing, which strained his marriage further.
The investigation disclosed that Alistair and his wife were separated, and their relationship was under immense strain. It was reported that Alistair exhibited erratic behavior during a challenging interaction with his wife shortly before taking his own life.
Despite efforts to find a new home for Alistair’s family, the situation remained unresolved as he tragically succumbed to his circumstances. His father voiced concerns about the extreme stress and challenges his son faced due to the actions of the local authority.
The family recounted how Alistair was caught off guard when Blackpool Council acquired the market where his barbershop thrived, leading to the abrupt termination of his lease without prior notice. Subsequently, he was informed that his home would be acquired in 2022 to facilitate the construction of a new education campus.
Alistair, who had purchased the residence on Milbourne Street in 2016 and adapted it for his disabled children, faced prolonged uncertainty and inadequate support from the council. His family highlighted the inadequate compensation and stressful negotiation process regarding a new home offer.
The relentless stress and lack of support ultimately took a toll on Alistair, pushing him towards exhaustion and despair.
