“Labour Urged to Target Wealthiest in Budget Amid Rising Inequality”

Labour Party member Rachel Reeves is being encouraged to focus on taxing the wealthiest individuals in the upcoming Budget, following a report revealing a significant increase in the wealth gap between the richest and the poorest in the UK.

According to experts, the widening wealth inequality poses serious risks to society, including social unrest, environmental challenges, economic stagnation, and a potential decline in democracy. The Fairness Foundation’s recent study highlighted a 54% surge in the wealth gap between the top and bottom 10% of the population from 2011 to 2021, driven by the appreciation of assets like property.

The report also noted a doubling of inheritance and gifts over the last two decades, reaching £100 billion, with expectations of another doubling by 2040. The wealthiest 10% of families consistently hold more than half of the total wealth, while the poorest 10% of households have a combined net worth of £15,400 or less.

Will Snell from the Fairness Foundation emphasized the urgent need for policy intervention to prevent further deepening of inequality, social division, economic inefficiency, and political disengagement. He stressed the importance of implementing bold measures such as effective wealth taxation to redistribute wealth across the economy and address the damaging levels of wealth inequality.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Budget include considerations of tax increases and spending cuts to address a projected £22 billion deficit. Rachel Reeves indicated a focus on ensuring the wealthiest contribute their fair share, although she is hesitant about implementing a dedicated wealth tax. She emphasized the significance of fostering economic growth and maintaining fiscal resilience through prudent tax and spending decisions.

Despite Labour’s pledge to shield working individuals from national insurance, VAT, and income tax hikes, speculation has arisen regarding potential deviations from this commitment. While not ruling out an income tax hike, Rachel Reeves affirmed her commitment to supporting working people by keeping their tax burdens as low as possible.
