A tragic accident occurred in northeastern Brazil when a passenger bus crashed into a sand embankment, resulting in the death of at least 17 individuals. The incident took place on Saturday, October 18, with the bus carrying around 30 passengers. The exact number of injured individuals, who were transported to nearby hospitals, is currently unknown.
The bus, identified as a “tourist bus” by Police Chief Luciano Holanda, was en route to Brumado but crashed in Saloá, a city in the state of Pernambuco. According to police reports, the driver lost control of the bus, veered into the opposite lane, struck rocks on the roadside, and then collided with a sand embankment, causing the bus to overturn. Some passengers were ejected from the vehicle during the rollover due to not wearing seat belts.
The bus was returning from Brumado in Bahia to Santa Cruz do Capibaribe in Pernambuco’s Agreste region when the accident occurred. Governor Jernimo Teixeira of Bahia expressed his condolences for the lives lost and injuries sustained, pledging support for rescue operations and victim identification.
Although the cause of the crash remains under investigation, preliminary reports indicate that the driver incurred minor injuries and tested negative for alcohol. In 2024, over 10,000 individuals lost their lives in traffic accidents in Brazil, as reported by the Ministry of Transportation.
