“Darts Drama: Joe Cullen Calls Out Mensur Suljovic’s Play”

Renowned darts player Joe Cullen recently expressed strong criticism towards veteran competitor Mensur Suljovic, accusing him of unfair play. The intense second-round showdown at the World Darts Championship ended in disappointment for Cullen, who faced a defeat against the Austrian player at Alexandra Palace.

Suljovic impressively turned the tables after losing a set, ultimately securing a 3-1 triumph over Cullen. Throughout the match, Cullen visibly showed impatience by checking his watch sarcastically and quietly urging his opponent to speed up his throws at the oche.

While Suljovic is known for his deliberate playing pace compared to other competitors, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly frustrated with his rival’s extended routines and celebratory gestures. Tensions escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen exchanging heated words with Suljovic, who responded with amusement.

Following his exit from the stage, Cullen delivered a scathing social media rant, declaring, “If that’s darts, I don’t want any part of it! Always liked Mensur away from the board, but that conduct was evident to all! I believe many share my sentiments. While some may justify it as part of the game, it amounts to CHEATING! That’s not what darts should be.”

When questioned about Cullen’s outburst and whether he had apologized for his pace of play during the post-match press conference, Suljovic appeared perplexed. He retorted, “I have never personally apologized to Joe Cullen. I play my game on that stage, what’s the issue?”

Suljovic defended his approach, stating, “I wait perhaps 40 seconds before my first dart. Some players (gestures throwing motion) and almost hit me in the head (gestures dodging a dart). This is unacceptable.”

In response to further inquiries about the incident, Suljovic expressed his confusion, stating, “I don’t understand his grievance. What is the problem? I offered him missed doubles and everything? I always play darts correctly. Perhaps my celebrations are excessive, but I respect Joe Cullen. He is a good person, but…”

Looking ahead, Suljovic may face defending world champion Luke Littler in the next round. Littler is set to compete against David Davies, a darts player and NHS area manager, in the upcoming match.
