An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the local community. The owner cited the establishment’s challenging location as the main reason for a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, ceased operations in Alburgh, Norfolk, after a successful two and a half years under owner Sonya Resemblance, who fondly referred to the patrons as “beautiful people.” This closure adds to the mounting crisis faced by pubs and hospitality businesses in Britain, with many facing closure due to escalating costs and evolving consumer behaviors.
A recent casualty was the popular White Horse in Beaconsfield, which permanently closed its doors earlier this month. The pub industry has been grappling with soaring expenses, leading to warnings of its decline, as evidenced by the closure of 300 pubs in the first quarter of 2025 alone.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the Dove Inn struggled to sustain operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a menu entirely free of gluten, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
Expressing gratitude to loyal customers, Sonya acknowledged the business’s contributions in creating jobs, providing training opportunities, and offering essential social spaces for mental well-being. Regrettably, the challenges of the location proved insurmountable, leading to the closure.
Prior to the shutdown, the business had acknowledged the industry-wide pressures affecting retail and hospitality. Sonya emphasized the difficulty of their location, despite the loyalty of returning customers. Despite efforts to save the business, the closure was confirmed on Friday, January 16, eliciting an outpouring of support from the community.
Messages of support flooded in following the announcement, with customers expressing sadness at the closure and hoping for a potential comeback in the future.
