A fresh search operation is underway for a young boy who disappeared from his grandparents’ rural property, stirring tragic concerns. Four-year-old Gus Lamont went missing 18 days ago from a remote homestead in the South Australian outback. The last sighting of him was around 5 pm while playing on a dirt mound at the 60,000ha Yunta estate, nearly 200 miles northeast of Adelaide.
After his grandmother called for him to come inside, Gus was nowhere to be found, sparking a massive search effort, believed to be the largest in the state’s history, focusing on his distinctive blonde curls and a single footprint found. Initially, authorities considered scaling back the search due to the grim prospect of his survival, but a recent change of plans led to a renewed search operation, reigniting hope for Gus’s family.
The ongoing search, restarted on Tuesday, now extends beyond previously searched areas following Gus’s disappearance. Despite the expanded effort, no new evidence has been discovered, and search teams have faced challenging conditions over the past two days, enduring hot and harsh weather.
Police reported that over 100 team members, including SA Police, ADF personnel, and SES volunteers, have been covering 20 to 25 kilometers daily in the scorching conditions. The search continues amid temperatures of 36 degrees, with authorities planning to begin searching at sunrise and conclude by midday on Thursday.
The investigation is concentrated near the Oak Station homestead, approximately 300km north of Adelaide, as Gus’s family copes with further distress caused by misleading information circulating online about his disappearance. False social media posts, including an AI-generated image showing an unknown individual allegedly taking Gus, have misled many users.
