Reform UK is facing criticism following the refusal of one of Nigel Farage’s key associates to rule out the possibility of relocating asylum seekers to the Falkland Islands or Gibraltar if the party comes into power.
Sarah Pochin, a prominent member of Reform UK representing Runcorn and Helsby, chose not to dismiss the controversial notion after the party suggested using British overseas territories as a backup plan for asylum seekers. During a debate in Westminster Hall, Labour MP Luke Charters expressed concerns about this proposal and urged Ms. Pochin to clarify her party’s stance on the matter.
In response to the pressure, Ms. Pochin stated that she would not exclude any potential policies, declining to provide further details or address follow-up inquiries.
Another Labour MP, Kevin Bonavia, praised the UK’s recent agreement with France on returns as a positive step forward, contrasting it with the idea of utilizing overseas territories to accommodate migrants. He criticized Ms. Pochin for not ruling out the use of the Falkland Islands, highlighting their historical significance in the conflict with Argentina in 1982.
Nigel Farage has claimed that a government led by Reform UK would deport 600,000 migrants within five years, raising doubts about the feasibility of such a plan and the potential collaboration with the Taliban.
In a previous statement from 2023, Reform MP Lee Anderson expressed reservations about sending migrants to the Falkland Islands, suggesting alternative locations like the Orkney Islands or remote Scottish isles for their settlement, emphasizing the need for humane treatment of individuals fleeing conflict or persecution.
