In a significant development, a drug dealer’s revealing topless photo played a crucial role in the exposure of a substantial criminal scheme worth millions of pounds. Anthony Dean and William Swann utilized encrypted platforms to trade illicit substances such as heroin, cocaine, and cannabis. The proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court disclosed that Dean operated under the alias “octojam” while Swann used the name “OctoRain.”
Through intercepted communications as part of Operation Venetic, the French authorities infiltrated the network in 2020 and uncovered incriminating conversations and notes on their accounts. These findings shed light on the extensive quantities and prices the defendants were dealing with, indicating a large-scale illegal operation. The prosecutor highlighted the duo’s capability to source and distribute significant amounts from imported shipments, as evidenced by messages referencing deals involving substantial quantities of heroin, cocaine, and cannabis.
The duo’s identities were unmasked when they shared images displaying their disheveled hair during the COVID-19 pandemic and closure of hair salons. Dean’s topless selfie taken in his bathroom mirror and Swann’s subsequent photo of his own hair inadvertently led to their identification.
Following their apprehension in January, further evidence emerged indicating Dean’s continued involvement in the distribution of Class A drugs, amounting to a potential multi-million pound enterprise. Dean, residing in Villiers Terrace, St Helens, confessed to conspiracy charges related to drug supply, importation, and money laundering. He received a 16-year prison sentence. Swann, residing in Harrier Close, Maghull, pleaded guilty to charges of inciting an offense and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Detective constable Kevin Mitchell remarked on the sophisticated nature of the operation, emphasizing the substantial wholesale value of the drugs traded by the defendants.
