Michelle Tolley, a dedicated campaigner in the NHS infected blood scandal, was honored at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, where she received a surprise gift. Alongside her fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, Michelle was recognized with a Special Recognition Award last year.
During the awards ceremony, while Michelle watched another awardee, Agnes Nisbett, receive a cruise holiday from P&O Cruises, the hosts announced that all 2024 winners would also receive the same prize. Michelle expressed her joy at the unexpected bonus after years of health struggles and advocating for victims of the scandal.
Having contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion in 1987, Michelle endured years of illness before her diagnosis and treatment. Motivated by her anger and determination to make a positive impact, she founded a support group, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and contributed to the official government inquiry.
The prospect of a cruise holiday was a welcomed respite for Michelle and her husband, who had not traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984. Their upcoming Canary Islands cruise, booked to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, also included a surprise vow renewal ceremony organized by P&O Cruises.
Embarking on the Ventura ship, Michelle was amazed by the experience, reminiscing about her childhood sailing trip and the overwhelming feeling of joy. During the cruise, the couple explored various on-board amenities, savored the cuisine, and ventured ashore to destinations like Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Lisbon.
Reflecting on their memorable holiday, Michelle and Dean praised the exceptional service, delightful experiences, and friendly staff aboard the ship. Michelle encourages others to consider a cruise vacation, emphasizing the fantastic facilities and the warmth of the crew that made their trip unforgettable.
