“Britons 50+ Urged: Schedule Crucial Cancer Screening”

Britons of a specific age group are being encouraged to schedule a crucial cancer screening appointment. Women who are 50 years old and above are eligible for a breast cancer screening every three years.

The NHS emphasized that this screening could help detect the disease at an early stage, before any symptoms become noticeable. Breast cancer ranks as the most prevalent cancer type in the UK, with approximately 56,900 new cases diagnosed annually, as reported by Cancer Research UK.

While breast cancer is less common in men, it is still a possibility, with around 390 male cases identified each year. The NHS highlighted the importance of regular breast screenings, stating that early detection through screening has led to enhanced recovery rates and survival from breast cancer.

NHS breast screening utilizes mammograms (X-rays) to detect cancers that may not be visible or palpable. Individuals aged 71 and above are not automatically invited for breast screening but can still opt for screening every three years by contacting their local breast screening service.

For transgender individuals and non-binary individuals, the invitation for breast screening is determined by the gender registered with their GP. Those registered as female will receive automatic screening invites, while those registered as male will need to request a screening appointment.

The NHS advised seeking medical attention from a GP if any symptoms of breast cancer are experienced, even after a clear screening result. It is crucial not to delay seeking medical advice if symptoms arise.

Regular self-checks of the breasts are recommended by the NHS to help individuals become familiar with what is normal for them, making it easier to identify any changes in size, appearance, or texture of the breasts.
