Mike Huckabee, the United States ambassador to Israel, strongly criticized the actions of Israeli settlers who besieged a Palestinian American family’s home in the West Bank, labeling it as a “horrific act of terror.” For several days, settlers have congregated near the residence in the village of Qusra, harassing the occupants despite attempts by the Israeli military to de-escalate the situation.
The group, consisting of numerous men, engaged in stone-throwing, attempted to breach a nearby stone wall, and prevented the family from leaving, leading to dwindling supplies. Qusai Abu Rida, who had barricaded himself in the house with his son for protection, disclosed that they were relocated by the Israeli military to another residence but are still confined to the area.
While the Israeli military did not confirm the relocation of residents, the homeowner, Loui Ridi, revealed that the settlers had been targeting his property in Qusra for months prior to the recent escalation. Huckabee stated that at their request, Israeli authorities have taken action to remove the individuals responsible for the siege, describing their actions as disgusting and intended to intimidate and harass the family.
Mayor Abed Al ​Athem Wadi of Qusra reported that six homes in the village, including three hilltop residences under siege, were evacuated and seized by Israeli soldiers. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the actions aimed at forcing residents off their property. The Canadian government, among others, deems the expansion of settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law.
Recent interventions by Israeli troops aimed to restore order, with the military dismantling two illegal outposts on the outskirts of Qusra and detaining an Israeli individual. Despite efforts to declare the area a closed military zone, settlers returned, obstructing roads with rocks. The ongoing increase in settler violence has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations and foreign governments, with accusations leveled at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration for overlooking settler attacks.
Qusra, located in a volatile area of the northern West Bank surrounded by settlements, has been a hotspot for violence. Recent incidents include the torching of a mosque in a suspected settler attack and deadly clashes resulting in casualties on both sides. The expansion of settlements, considered unlawful by international standards, has been criticized for jeopardizing the establishment of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank, a territory sought by Palestinians for their future statehood.
While Palestinians advocate for the return of the West Bank captured by Israel in 1967, settlers and their allies argue for Israeli sovereignty over the area based on historical, religious, and security grounds.
