A family residing in Squamish, British Columbia, considers themselves fortunate to have survived a close call during a construction mishap on Hamilton Street’s 1800 block. Claire Johnstone and her family narrowly escaped a dangerous situation when a scaffold collapsed near their car on August 11. The incident occurred as they were preparing to leave their hotel, and Johnstone, while securing her young son in the car, suddenly heard the scaffold crashing down beside them.
Startled by the loud noise and the sight of metal structures hitting the car’s glass roof, Johnstone quickly urged her husband, who was driving, to move away from the building. Feeling vulnerable without her seat belt on, she anxiously protected her son by positioning herself over his car seat in case of any debris penetrating the vehicle.
The family, including Johnstone’s mother and partner, felt distressed and helpless during the chaotic situation. After parking the car and ensuring their safety, they witnessed two injured men trapped in the aftermath of the accident. Promptly seeking assistance from passersby to call emergency services, they learned that the incident was labeled a workplace accident by the authorities.
Despite the harrowing experience, the family had to depart for the hospital to have their son Theo examined. Upon reviewing the Tesla’s footage, Johnstone was deeply shocked to see how close they came to danger. Reflecting on the emotional turmoil, she expressed gratitude for their safety but acknowledged the lingering impact of the incident on her well-being.
The incident left a lasting impression on Johnstone, who emphasized the significance of small decisions that influenced the outcome. The damaged car bore witness to the near-tragedy, with a brick landing on the vehicle’s front and metal components causing substantial destruction. Johnstone admitted to struggling with sleep and anxiety post-incident, underscoring the profound effect it had on her mental state.
Acknowledging their good fortune in escaping unscathed, Johnstone emphasized the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones. Despite the traumatic experience, she found solace in the quality time spent with her son and expressed contentment with the life she had led up to that point.
