“Darts Legend Paul Lim, 71, Makes History at PDC World Championship”

Paul Lim has once again etched his name in the history books by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at the Alexandra Palace. The 71-year-old has solidified his position as the oldest player to secure a victory at the PDC World Championship.

In a remarkable turn of events, Lim overcame De Graaf, who is 35 years his junior, with a 3-1 triumph, securing his place in the second round. This victory comes 44 years after his initial appearance at the World Championship.

Following his last World Championship participation in 2022, where he was eliminated in the first round by Joe Murnam, Lim successfully qualified for the Alexandra Palace. Despite registering an average of just 86.52 with two 180s, his performance was sufficient to outshine a below-par De Graaf.

Expressing his gratitude after the match, Lim acknowledged the support of the audience, stating, “First and foremost, I’m thankful to be here and I’m thankful to this crowd behind me. Just to make it here is an achievement.” He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities, noting, “No matter how good you are, there are times where you can miss a shot, and you’ve just got to take advantage. I just took the advantage and I’m glad.”

Lim’s previous notable victory on the grand stage was against the current World No.2, Luke Humphries, in the previous year’s tournament. If Humphries emerges victorious against Ted Evetts in the upcoming match, Lim and Humphries are poised to face off once again in the second round.

Reflecting on his potential rematch with Humphries, Lim praised the dedication and skill of his opponent, stating, “Luke Humphries, I’ve been watching the last few years and he puts so much effort and time into what he’s doing. He’s a good guy, a gentleman and a great player. I just hope on a given day it can happen again. He’s good but can be beaten.”

Nicknamed the Singapore Slinger, Lim’s enduring presence in the world of darts has solidified his status as one of the sport’s iconic figures. He holds the distinction of being the first player to achieve a nine-darter at the World Championship during the 1990 BDO tournament, a feat accomplished against Jack McKenna, earning him a £52,000 bonus.
