“Beluga Whale Jelly Bean Dies After Relocation”

A beluga whale that was recently relocated from Marineland park in Niagara Falls, Ont., has passed away, making it the third death among the transferred animals. The Oceanogràfic de València confirmed the sudden death of Jelly Bean, who arrived at the Spanish aquarium less than a month ago along with another beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins as part of an international rescue mission.

Jelly Bean had been experiencing feeding difficulties in the days leading up to her death, prompting increased monitoring by the veterinary team. Despite showing signs of improvement and responsiveness to caregivers, she tragically passed away. A necropsy will be conducted by OceanogrĂ fic’s veterinarians in collaboration with pathologists at CEU Cardenal Herrera University to determine the cause of death.

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s death and extended condolences to the staff at the Spanish aquarium. The government of Canada had taken steps to ensure the safe transport of the whales, including issuing necessary permits and authorizations after health assessments. Cleopatra and the four dolphins that accompanied Jelly Bean are reportedly in good health at the aquarium.

The relocations of the belugas from Marineland were initiated due to financial constraints at the park, which necessitated the transfer of all 30 belugas and four dolphins to various aquariums in the U.S. and Spain. Animal Justice raised concerns about the stress and health risks associated with moving the belugas, emphasizing the need for transparent health assessments and proactive planning for their well-being.

Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose highlighted the unprecedented nature of the beluga transfers and warned about the potential dangers and stress faced by the animals during transportation. She advocated for caution and careful consideration of the animals’ well-being, emphasizing the need for thorough planning and assessment to mitigate risks associated with such relocations.

The loss of Jelly Bean has underscored the challenges and complexities involved in rescuing and relocating marine mammals, with ongoing efforts focused on ensuring the welfare and safety of the remaining animals. The teams involved in the rescue mission are dedicated to providing the best possible care for the belugas, acknowledging the unique needs and histories of each animal involved.

The passing of Jelly Bean serves as a poignant reminder of the difficult journey faced by rescued marine animals and the ongoing efforts to safeguard their health and well-being in new environments.
