Arctic Plant Enthusiast Discovers Rare Bladderwort

Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a rare discovery in July while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit. He stumbled upon a plant species rarely seen in the Arctic, known as bladderwort, which could have implications for the spread of invasive species in Northern regions as the climate changes.

Koehler found the brownish bladderwort plant in a pond within the park. Despite its unremarkable appearance to the casual observer, Koehler recognized its unique characteristics. The carnivorous plant is adorned with small black balls, or bladders, containing partially digested flies. Typically found in more southern regions, bladderwort infrequently ventures into the tundra environment.

The only other documented instance of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012, when scientists discovered samples near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. This finding was documented in the scientific journal Phytokeys. During three expeditions to the Arctic, the research team identified over 30 new plant species in the region.

Koehler views the discovery as a potential indicator of climate change. While the Arctic has historically hosted few invasive species due to its harsh conditions, rising temperatures are creating a more favorable environment for non-native plants. This shift is expected to alter the ecosystem, with both invasive and native species expanding their presence in the Arctic.

Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature who participated in the 2012 study, shares concerns about the impact of plant migration northward. He highlights the role of birds, cargo ships, and human visitors in introducing plant seeds to Arctic ecosystems, emphasizing the need to prevent invasive species from outcompeting native flora.

Although Sokoloff believes that Koehler’s discovery is unlikely to pose significant harm, he warns that other plants could have detrimental effects. A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 identified over 2,500 species with the potential to invade the Arctic, disrupting the native ecosystem.

Koehler plans to gather a sample of the bladderwort found in Iqaluit for further analysis at the Museum of Nature. This initiative aims to enhance scientific understanding of the plant’s northward expansion and its implications for the Arctic environment.
