“UK Officials Step Up Fight Against Antisemitism”

Councillors and government officials bear a moral obligation to combat antisemitism, according to the Communities Secretary. Steve Reed has sent a letter to council leaders in response to the recent attack on Heaton Park Synagogue, emphasizing the importance of communal spaces like libraries and community centers in promoting unity and eliminating division. The attack, occurring shortly before the second anniversary of the Hamas-Israel conflict, resulted in two deaths and three injuries.

Simultaneously, the Education Secretary has unveiled strategies to address antisemitic abuse in universities. Plans include educating young individuals on identifying and challenging online misinformation and providing anti-antisemitism training to thousands of teachers. This initiative aims to eradicate antisemitism in educational settings, as announced by Bridget Phillipson.

In communication seen by the Sunday Mirror, Mr. Reed has urged public servants and councillors to take concrete actions against antisemitism. He highlighted the significance of public spaces in fostering unity and preventing hate speech. Mr. Reed also recommended that councils adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Definition of Antisemitism, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism within society.

Additionally, measures have been introduced to safeguard Jewish students on campuses, with the Union of Jewish Students set to conduct 600 training sessions for university staff. Ms. Phillipson has called on vice chancellors to implement measures to protect Jewish students while safeguarding free speech and the right to peaceful protest on campus.
