Caroline Wozniacki came to the defense of Emma Raducanu after John Isner implied that Raducanu’s remarkable US Open victory was overshadowed by another recent tennis upset. Raducanu made history in 2021 by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
The then 23-year-old teenager impressively won the championship without dropping a set in 10 consecutive matches, culminating in a thrilling final against Leylah Fernandez. On the other hand, Valentin Vacherot’s surprising victory at the Shanghai Masters last month, where he became the lowest-ranked player ever to win a Masters title, also garnered attention in the tennis world.
Vacherot defeated top players like Alexander Bublik, Holger Rune, Novak Djokovic, and ultimately his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final to clinch the trophy. While Isner argued that Vacherot’s achievement overshadowed Raducanu’s Grand Slam win, Wozniacki countered by emphasizing that winning a Grand Slam title holds more significance.
Isner, a retired American player, voiced his opinion on a podcast, stating that Vacherot’s success was more improbable given his limited previous main-level victories. However, Wozniacki, a former Australian Open champion, maintained that winning a Grand Slam title outweighs other accomplishments in tennis.
Wozniacki, who temporarily retired in 2022 but made a comeback in 2023, participated in major tournaments such as the US Open, Indian Wells Open, and the Paris Olympics. Although she recently welcomed her third child, her return to competitive tennis remains uncertain.
Raducanu, on the other hand, has not replicated her US Open success and has acknowledged struggling with the comparisons to that significant victory. In a recent interview with The Guardian, she expressed the ongoing challenge of managing expectations and memories of her historic win.
Despite undergoing life-changing experiences, Raducanu revealed that she explored therapy briefly but ultimately decided to rely on self-reflection to navigate her unique journey. Her unconventional path in the tennis world sets her apart from other athletes, shaping her approach to seeking guidance and coping with challenges.
