The upcoming Gaza peace summit is seen as a critical step in bringing an end to the ongoing conflict and violence in the region, as per anticipated statements from Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister is set to travel to Sharm El-Sheikh for the peace plan signing ceremony with US President Donald Trump, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Starmer is expected to emphasize the importance of seizing the opportunity for lasting peace and a secure future in the region. The UK pledges its support for the peace plan implementation to facilitate the rebuilding of lives in a safe environment for both sides.
During the summit, Starmer is likely to announce a £20 million aid package from the UK, part of a larger commitment of £116 million, to assist in providing essential water, sanitation, and hygiene services to thousands of civilians in Gaza. Yvette Cooper highlighted the collaborative efforts with international partners to drive momentum for President Trump’s peace initiative.
However, urgent attention is now required for the reconstruction of Gaza, where 92% of homes have been damaged or destroyed due to Israeli attacks, resulting in over 67,000 casualties in the past two years. Cooper stressed the need to focus on clearing rubble, repairing infrastructure, restoring healthcare services, and rebuilding homes for the future recovery of Gaza.
The UK, along with countries like France, Australia, and Canada, recently acknowledged Palestinian statehood in a significant move. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson noted the UK’s significant role in the peace process, while Israeli officials expressed differing views on the UK’s involvement in the reconstruction efforts.
