A surfer bravely drove himself to the hospital for urgent surgery after a shark attack left him with two leg bites. The man, aged in his 50s, encountered a bronze whaler shark, known for its large size, at D’Estrees Bay on Kangaroo Island, Australia.
The incident occurred around 1.37 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by Shark Watch South Australia. Witnessed by a member of the public, the shark attacked the man while chasing seals in the bay. Bronze whalers are commonly sighted in coastal and offshore waters of South Australia.
Despite the severity of the attack, police confirm that the man’s injuries are not life-threatening. In a separate incident, a courageous teenager shared her harrowing experience of being attacked by two sharks during a scuba excursion in Belize last summer.
Annabelle Carlson, a 16-year-old from Aspen, Colorado, recounted how she was bitten by two sharks near Half Moon Caye in the Gulf of Honduras. She described fighting off the first shark and being bitten by a second one as her family attempted a rescue.
Sustaining severe injuries to her leg, Annabelle underwent amputation surgery at Belize Healthcare Partners hospital before being transferred to Miami for further treatment. Despite the traumatic event, she remains positive, even dressing up as a shark attack survivor for Halloween.
Reflecting on the incident, Annabelle’s mother expressed gratitude for her daughter’s survival and praised her resilience. Shark attacks in Belize are rare, with only a few recorded over the past century, making Annabelle’s case one of the most severe.
