Government to Crack Down on Fraudulent Immigration Lawyers

Fraudulent immigration lawyers will have their ill-gotten gains confiscated as part of a new crackdown set to be announced by government officials today.

Proceeds obtained from deceptive individuals posing as legal professionals will be redirected towards enhancing border security in the UK, according to outlined plans. The government intends to bolster the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover millions from fake legal advisors.

The Home Office emphasizes that this initiative aims to reinvest the seized funds into combatting the trafficking networks that these criminals previously financed. This move follows several instances, such as a fraudulent advisor who amassed over £500,000 and a group of three individuals who fraudulently obtained more than £3 million by targeting victims through online platforms.

These culprits charged significant fees for services related to visa applications and contesting deportations. Security Minister Dan Jarvis stated, “Exploitative rogue immigration advisors will face the consequences. By empowering the Immigration Advice Authority with robust new capabilities, we are depriving criminals of their illicit gains and utilizing them to fortify our borders and ensure public safety.”

The proposed measures by the Home Office, anticipated to be implemented subsequent to an ongoing consultation until the year’s end, will grant the Immigration Advice Authority expanded authority to recover assets.

The Immigration Advice Authority will be empowered to track and freeze assets, recover funds, and prosecute offenders independently without relying on law enforcement assistance.

These developments supplement the additional powers granted under the Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill, which will impose fines of up to £15,000 on individuals posing as immigration lawyers.
