Hamas, in a weakened state, is currently facing internal strife from four powerful factions vying for control of Gaza. The group, amidst a ceasefire after a prolonged conflict, is striving to regain authority, with US President Donald Trump threatening forceful disarmament and anticipating the surrender of weapons soon as the factions make their moves.
Hamas has deployed approximately 7,000 fighters to “purge Gaza of criminals and collaborators.” These factions, comprising the Popular Force, Doghmosh, Al-Majayda, and Hellis, are allegedly supported by Israel. Recent violent clashes have erupted in Gaza post the peace agreement, including an incident where Palestinian influencer Saleh al-Jafarawi, known as “Mr FAFO,” was reportedly killed.
In efforts to reassert control, Hamas’ death squads have been seen executing perceived enemies publicly in Gaza. Despite condemnations from the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, the executions continue amidst a power struggle. Local families and armed groups have capitalized on the region’s instability following Israeli attacks, further exacerbating the crisis.
While Hamas has returned some hostages’ bodies, concerns linger over the ceasefire’s sustainability, especially with Israel’s reluctance to open the Rafah border crossing for aid. Trump has vowed to ensure Hamas disarms swiftly, even if it requires force. The peace plan demands Hamas to disarm and hand over the deceased hostages, which have not yet been fulfilled, raising doubts about the agreement’s longevity.
